Chapter 1: The Fire Engine in Her Driveway

“MOVE THAT TRUCK! YOU’RE BLOCKING MY DRIVEWAY, AND I’M DONE WAITING!”

Karen Whitmore’s voice cut through the roar of the fire.

She stood at the edge of the emergency perimeter, gripping a large adjustable wrench in one hand and pointing toward the red fire engine with the other. Her bright red blouse, orange jacket, yellow trousers, and oversized earrings made her impossible to miss against the gray smoke filling the suburban street.

Across the road, flames pushed through the windows of her neighbor’s two-story house.

Firefighters were everywhere.

A hose snaked across the pavement. Water hammered against the burning structure. Sirens flashed red against parked cars and front windows. The smell of smoke hung heavily in the afternoon air.

Firefighter Daniel Brooks turned sharply when he saw the wrench.

“MA’AM, PUT THE WRENCH DOWN AND STEP BACK!”

Karen lowered it only a few inches.

“Why should I? That truck is on my street, blocking my property, and nobody asked me!”

Daniel stepped between Karen and the fire engine.

“We’re fighting a house fire. Stay behind the emergency line.”

Karen pointed toward the driveway behind her.

“My driveway is right there! I have somewhere to be!”

Daniel looked briefly toward the burning house.

“So does everyone inside that house.”

Karen’s face tightened.

“That’s my neighbor’s problem!”

Daniel’s expression hardened, but his voice remained controlled.

“Your neighbor’s house is burning. This truck needs to stay exactly where it is.”

Karen took another step forward.

Daniel raised one gloved hand.

“Back up. Do not approach the equipment.”

For several seconds, the only sound was the fire.

Then Karen lifted the wrench again.

“You don’t get to park here, block my driveway, and then tell me I can’t even check what’s in your truck!”

Daniel looked at the wrench, then at Karen.

“Ma’am, this equipment is being used for an emergency. You need to stay behind the line.”

Karen finally lowered the wrench.

But she didn’t leave.

Instead, she remained planted at the edge of the street, staring at the fire engine as though it had personally insulted her.

Then she noticed something Daniel didn’t.

Her own garage door was open.

And inside the garage sat her car, its keys still in the ignition.

Karen had been planning to leave for an appointment.

Now she couldn’t.

She pulled out her phone and called her adult daughter, Melissa.

“They’ve blocked me in,” Karen said.

Melissa listened quietly.

“Mom, there’s a house fire?”

“Yes.”

“Then let the firefighters work.”

Karen looked toward the flames.

“They could have parked somewhere else.”

Melissa paused.

“Mom, please don’t interfere.”

Karen ended the call without answering.

A moment later, Daniel shouted toward another firefighter, and the crew moved deeper into the smoke.

Karen watched them disappear.

Her irritation remained.

But for the first time, she also noticed how little attention anyone was paying to their own safety.

The firefighters weren’t protecting the truck.

They were using it to protect people.

Karen tightened her grip around the wrench.

And instead of going inside her house, she stayed outside to watch.
