Chapter 1: The Gate

“Karen! Open that gate! You’re crushing my cart!”

The motorized gate kept moving.

Mr. Walter Hayes gripped the handle of his four-wheel mobility cart with both hands, trying to pull himself and the cart backward. The front wheels were already beyond the threshold, but the rear wheels remained trapped on the other side.

The metal edge pressed against the cart’s side guard with an ugly grinding sound.

Beside the control pedestal stood Karen Whitmore, her enormous frame filling the narrow space. Her cherry-red cardigan, hot-pink blouse, yellow scarf, and orange patterned pants made her impossible to miss.

One hand held the close button down.

The other gripped the gate.

She leaned her weight into it.

“Then get out of the way!”

Walter stared at her.

He had lived in the community for fourteen years. He knew the gate. He knew the pedestrian path. More importantly, he knew that the gate was supposed to stop whenever something was caught in its path.

Karen knew it too.

That was what frightened him.

Walter reached toward the emergency-open control.

Karen slapped his hand away.

“Don’t touch my controls!”

“Your controls?” Walter said, disbelief replacing fear. “This is a community gate!”

Karen stepped closer.

“Maybe you shouldn’t be using a gate this narrow if you can’t handle it.”

Walter’s jaw tightened.

The cart was not a luxury. It was how he carried groceries, mail, packages, and the small things that allowed him to remain independent in his own neighborhood.

He had refused to give up that independence simply because walking had become slower.

Karen knew that.

Everyone knew that.

And yet she was using his age and mobility against him.

Walter stopped pulling.

For a second, Karen smiled.

“That’s what I thought.”

But Walter wasn’t surrendering.

He had noticed something beside the gate.

A small safety sensor was blinking.

He slowly rolled the cart backward.

The gate motor strained.

Then—

BEEP—WHIRR.

The gate suddenly reversed.

Karen stumbled backward, losing her grip.

“What did you do?”

Walter’s voice was suddenly calm.

“Nothing. You triggered the safety sensor.”

The gate opened.

Walter rolled forward immediately, clearing the threshold.

Then Karen stepped after him.

The sensor detected her.

The gate stopped.

For the first time that afternoon, Karen was the one caught in the middle.

Walter turned his cart around.

Karen gripped the bars, furious.

“Looks like it knows who’s blocking who,” Walter said.

Her face reddened.

She pointed at him.

“People like you don’t get special treatment just because you’re old and need a cart!”

Walter stared at her.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Karen walked away.

She didn’t realize yet that someone had seen everything.

And that person was already reaching for a phone.
