Chapter 1: The Cable Across the Path

“Don’t touch my cable! You are NOT coming through here!”

Karen’s voice cracked across the narrow passage between the two suburban homes.

She yanked the thick orange extension cable toward her side of the yard with both hands, planting her broad body directly in front of the homeowner.

Frank Miller stopped short.

The cable belonged to him.

He had bought it years ago for yard work, kept it coiled neatly in his garage, and used it whenever he needed power at the far end of his property. It was heavy-duty, weather-rated, and more than long enough to reach his own tools.

He had never loaned it to Karen.

Yet there it was, stretched across the passage and disappearing into her yard.

Behind Karen, a large outdoor appliance rumbled steadily.

Frank adjusted his glasses and stared at it.

Then he looked back at the woman blocking his way.

“Your cable?” he asked.

Karen’s lips tightened.

“That’s what I said.”

Frank took one step to the left.

Karen moved with him.

He stepped right.

She stepped right.

The passage was barely wide enough for one person. Karen knew exactly what she was doing. She had turned her own body into a gate.

Frank looked down at the cable.

“You’re using my property.”

“I borrowed it.”

“You didn’t ask.”

“You weren’t using it.”

The words landed strangely.

Frank looked toward his own backyard, then back at the cable.

He had been using it.

He had simply unplugged it from his table saw earlier that afternoon.

That was not the same thing as giving it away.

Karen pulled the cable another few inches toward her property.

Frank caught it.

For several seconds, neither let go.

The cable stretched between them while the appliance continued humming in Karen’s yard.

Frank’s jaw tightened.

“Because you took it without asking.”

Karen released one hand and pointed at his chest.

“I didn’t take anything.”

Her voice rose.

“I borrowed it because you weren’t using it.”

Frank stared at her.

Then his eyes shifted past her shoulder.

The cable disappeared behind a row of decorative shrubs and ran directly to the appliance.

The motor continued its steady mechanical hum.

Karen noticed his gaze.

She moved sideways, trying to block his view.

“Stop looking at my property!”

Frank didn’t move toward her.

He simply looked at the cable.

Then at the appliance.

Then back at Karen.

“Then unplug it.”

Karen froze.

For the first time, her confidence slipped.

Frank waited.

Karen tightened her grip.

Instead of unplugging anything, she lifted her chin.

“Why should I unplug it when you already owe me for using my property?”

Frank blinked.

The accusation made no sense.

But Karen said it with such certainty that, for one uncomfortable moment, the narrow passage seemed to become even smaller.

Frank had spent most of his adult life believing that arguments could be solved if two people simply explained themselves.

Standing there with Karen, he began to realize that some arguments were not about explanations.

They were about control.

And Karen had decided that the passage belonged to her.

So had the cable.

And, apparently, anything else she could convince herself she had a right to use.

Frank slowly released his grip.

Karen smiled.

She thought she had won.

She had no idea that Frank had stopped pulling for a completely different reason.

He was looking past her.

At the yard.

At the objects surrounding the cable.

And at one small obstacle sitting exactly where it had been left that morning.
