Chapter 1: It’s My Driveway

“My guests need this space.”

Marilyn Harper heard the words just as she reached the edge of her driveway.

She stopped.

Across from her stood Diane Whitmore, her next-door neighbor, one hand wrapped around the metal post of Marilyn’s No Parking sign. Diane was trying to turn it away from the street.

Behind Diane, a dark gray luxury SUV sat across Marilyn’s driveway, blocking the garage completely.

Marilyn stared at the vehicle for a moment.

Then she looked at Diane.

At sixty-six, Marilyn had learned that there were moments when raising her voice only gave the other person control. This was not a moment for shouting.

She stepped forward and took hold of the opposite side of the signpost.

“It’s my driveway.”

Diane’s practiced smile disappeared.

For nearly two years, Marilyn had watched Diane slowly behave as though the entire neighborhood belonged to her. She had organized block gatherings, volunteered for the homeowners association, corrected other residents about trash cans and lawn height, and somehow developed the habit of speaking about neighborhood rules as if she had written them herself.

But this was different.

The SUV was not parked near Marilyn’s driveway.

It was blocking it.

And the garage door was still closed.

Diane tightened her grip.

Marilyn pulled the sign back toward the street.

The metal post gave a sharp CLACK.

Neither woman let go.

Then the garage motor came alive.

Both women heard it.

The garage door behind the SUV began to rise.

Diane’s eyes flicked toward the vehicle.

Then toward the opening garage.

Something changed in her face.

It was small—barely more than a tightening around the eyes—but Marilyn noticed it.

She had spent enough years raising children, caring for aging parents, and navigating difficult people to recognize fear when it tried to disguise itself as irritation.

Diane released the sign.

Marilyn didn’t.

The garage door continued upward.

Diane took a step toward the SUV.

Marilyn followed with her eyes.

“Move your car.”

Diane turned back.

“You’re not parking here today.”

Marilyn paused.

Then she looked at the SUV.

Then at the garage.

“Then why is your car in my driveway?”

Diane opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The garage door rose another foot.

Inside, the front of another vehicle became visible.

Its hazard lights were blinking.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

Diane went completely still.

Marilyn watched her expression change.

The irritation was gone.

So was the smug confidence.

For the first time since Marilyn had known her, Diane looked genuinely afraid.

And Marilyn suddenly understood that the SUV was not the only thing Diane had been trying to keep hidden.
