Chapter 2: The Complaint

The man’s name was Walter Hayes.

He was seventy-eight, a retired postal worker, and had lived in the same small Ohio town for more than forty years.

Walter had learned long ago that dignity was often quiet.

It was paying your bills on time.

Keeping your promises.

Holding the door for someone behind you.

And, when your body became slower than it used to be, accepting help without allowing yourself to become bitter.

That afternoon, he had driven to the supermarket after a rehabilitation appointment.

Three months earlier, Walter had fallen on the icy steps outside his house.

Nothing had broken, but the injury had changed his balance. His doctor wanted him walking regularly while using the cane until his strength returned.

Walter hated the cane.

Not because it hurt.

Because every time he used it, strangers sometimes looked at him as though he had suddenly become fragile.

He wasn’t fragile.

He was simply seventy-eight.

And that afternoon, his legs had needed a chair.

The employee who intervened was named Melissa Grant.

After Karen left, Melissa checked on Walter.

“Are you okay?”

Walter nodded.

“I am now.”

Melissa smiled.

Then her radio crackled.

A supervisor was asking for her.

Karen had already reached the customer-service desk.

She was describing the incident as though Walter had attacked her.

“She screamed at me,” Karen said.

Melissa heard the complaint from across the front end.

Karen claimed Walter had tried to take a seat she had reserved.

She also claimed the employee had embarrassed her publicly.

Melissa could have defended herself immediately.

Instead, she asked Walter whether he wanted to make a statement.

He shook his head.

“No need.”

“Are you sure?”

Walter looked toward the doors.

“I don’t want a fight over a chair.”

Melissa glanced at the medical card still in her hand.

“Maybe it’s not about the chair anymore.”

Walter said nothing.

That evening, the store manager reviewed the security footage.

The recording showed exactly what happened.

Karen had placed her handbag on the empty chair several minutes before Walter approached.

The footage also showed something else.

Walter had nearly lost his balance while waiting in line.

He had caught himself against a checkout divider.

The manager paused the video.

Melissa watched beside him.

Neither spoke.

Then the manager noticed Karen had returned to the store’s customer-service desk the next morning.

She wasn’t there to apologize.

She had brought photographs.

And one of them showed the row of chairs.

Karen had circled the seat in red.

Her complaint had become something larger than a disagreement.

She wanted the store to change its seating policy.

And she wanted Walter held responsible for what she called “harassment.”
