Chapter 3: The Path Nobody Could Use

Helen saw Mr. Wallace first.

At seventy-eight, he walked slowly with a metal walker after hip surgery.

The sidewalk was his safest route to the mailbox.

That morning, the container stood directly across part of the path.

Helen stepped forward.

“Karen, could you move that?”

Karen was standing beside her car.

“No.”

“Mr. Wallace needs to get through.”

“He can go around.”

Helen looked toward the street.

Cars were moving through the neighborhood.

“There isn’t a safe place for him to go around.”

Karen shrugged.

“He can wait.”

Mr. Wallace stopped several feet away.

He looked at the container.

Then at Karen.

“I don’t want trouble,” he said quietly.

Karen lifted her chin.

“Then don’t make trouble.”

The words landed harder than Karen intended.

Helen stepped between them.

“This isn’t about ownership anymore.”

Karen glared at her.

“It has always been about ownership.”

Marcus arrived moments later.

He saw the blocked sidewalk and immediately understood the new problem.

The city had scheduled another truck to finish the cleanup.

But Marcus didn’t move the container himself.

Instead, he photographed the obstruction and contacted Daniel.

Within minutes, Daniel arrived.

This time, he wasn’t alone.

A city accessibility officer came with him.

Karen became defensive.

“This is harassment.”

“No one is harassing you,” Daniel said. “We’re documenting an obstruction of a public pedestrian route.”

Karen pointed toward her house.

“Everything here affects my property!”

The accessibility officer looked at the survey marker.

“Your property is not being entered.”

Karen’s face tightened.

Then she did something unexpected.

She grabbed her handbag and walked toward the container.

“I’ll move it myself.”

For the first time, everyone thought she might be giving in.

But Karen dragged the container farther toward the curb—then deliberately positioned it across the access path again.

Marcus stared at her.

“Why would you put it there?”

Karen answered without hesitation.

“Because I want everyone to understand that I have rights too.”

Daniel looked at the blocked walkway.

Then at the survey marker.

He quietly wrote something down.

Karen didn’t notice.

But Helen did.

“What did you just document?” she asked.

Daniel closed the folder.

“The next step.”

That afternoon, Karen received an official notice.

It wasn’t a fine.

It was a request for a formal property-line meeting.

And attached to the notice was the photograph Marcus had taken the day before.
