Chapter 4: When the Story Reached the Police
The police report was surprisingly ordinary.
There were no dramatic accusations.
No shouting.
Just statements.
Karen claimed Thomas had intimidated her.
Thomas described the shove.
Daniel provided the funeral-home footage.
Susan provided the recordings.
The investigating officer, Officer Rachel Morgan, watched everything carefully.
She did not rush to judgment.
She asked questions.
Where had everyone been standing?
Who had spoken first?
Had anyone touched Karen?
Had Thomas threatened her?
Had Karen been asked to leave?
One by one, the answers lined up.
The recordings filled the gaps.
Thomas had approached her calmly.
Karen had escalated the confrontation.
Thomas had not touched her.
Karen had pushed him.
And several witnesses had seen it.
Officer Morgan explained that the available evidence would be reviewed before any decision was made.
Susan thanked her.
Outside the station, Thomas looked exhausted.
“I never wanted this.”
“I know.”
“I keep thinking about Mom.”
Susan looked at him.
“She would probably tell us to stop letting Karen take up so much space in our lives.”
Thomas smiled sadly.
“That sounds like her.”
For the first time since the funeral, they laughed.
It lasted only a few seconds.
Then Susan’s phone rang.
It was Evelyn.
Her voice was uncertain.
“I owe you an apology.”
Susan listened.
Evelyn explained that Karen had visited her the previous evening.
She had told Evelyn that Thomas had embarrassed her and that the family was trying to destroy her reputation.
Evelyn had believed her.
Until Karen accidentally mentioned something she could not have known unless she had seen the video.
Evelyn had asked how Karen knew Thomas had fallen backward into a chair.
Karen had gone silent.
That was when Evelyn realized Karen’s story was not complete.
“I should have asked questions before believing her,” Evelyn said.
Susan appreciated the honesty.
“Thank you for telling me.”
After the call, Thomas stared across the parking lot.
“You know what bothers me most?”
“What?”
“She keeps saying it was a joke.”
Susan nodded.
“She wants the intention to matter more than the impact.”
That evening, Karen received a formal notice from the funeral home stating that she was not permitted to attend future services there without prior approval.
She was also informed that if she returned and caused another disturbance, staff would contact law enforcement immediately.
It was not a dramatic punishment.
It was simply a boundary.
And that boundary mattered.
The following day, Susan learned something else.
Karen had been scheduled to attend a neighborhood association meeting the next week.
The meeting included several residents who had not heard the full story.
Karen had already told some of them that Susan’s family was “trying to ruin her.”
Susan did not want to turn the meeting into another battlefield.
But if Karen spoke first, the family might once again be forced to defend themselves against a version of events that wasn’t true.
Susan made a decision.
She would attend.
She would bring the evidence.
And she would speak only once.
