Chapter 5: What the Camera Showed
Walter returned to the hospital with Emily beside him.
This time, she refused to let him go alone.
The privacy officer met them in a conference room.
A security supervisor sat beside her.
They explained that they could not provide every detail of their investigation, but they could confirm what the footage showed.
The person who had used the public phone was Karen.
Emily looked at her father.
Walter said nothing.
The supervisor continued.
Karen had entered the hospital shortly before Walter arrived.
She had complained at the front desk about being denied a particular service.
She then moved toward the public phone.
A few minutes later, the clinic received the call requesting that Walter’s appointment be moved.
The call came from that phone.
The hospital had not yet established exactly what Karen’s intention had been.
But the sequence was clear.
Walter leaned back.
He remembered the morning.
The doorway.
The shouting.
The entitlement.
And now this.
Emily’s hands tightened around her purse.
“Dad, she interfered with your medical appointment.”
Walter looked at the privacy officer.
“Why?”
“We don’t know.”
That mattered.
Walter refused to fill the gap with his imagination.
“What happens now?”
The hospital had already restricted Karen from making changes to another patient’s records or appointments and documented the incident.
But the privacy officer emphasized something else.
The incident had exposed a weakness in the hospital’s process.
A person could provide enough personal information over the phone to influence scheduling without proper verification.
Walter understood immediately.
“This isn’t only about me.”
“No,” the officer said. “It isn’t.”
Walter looked through the conference-room window toward the lobby.
Hundreds of people came through those doors every day.
Older patients.
Parents.
People with disabilities.
People frightened about test results.
People who were already carrying enough uncertainty.
He thought about how easily a stranger could create another problem for someone simply by speaking confidently.
“I want to file a formal complaint,” Walter said.
Emily looked surprised.
“You do?”
“Yes.”
“Against her?”
“Against what happened.”
That distinction mattered to him.
He didn’t want revenge.
He wanted the system changed.
The hospital agreed to investigate the incident and review its verification procedures.
But there was one more development.
Security had found another piece of footage.
It showed Karen returning to the hospital after her original confrontation.
This time, she had not gone to the clinic.
She had gone to the administration office.
And what she asked for there could change everything.
