Chapter 1: Open That Bucket

“WAIT! OPEN THAT BUCKET! WHAT ARE YOU HIDING IN THERE?”

The shout cut through the laughter of Halloween night so sharply that several people on the sidewalk turned around.

Three children stopped in their tracks.

The little vampire clutched a black plastic bucket filled with candy. Beside him stood a small astronaut and a child dressed as a classic white ghost. Their costumes glowed beneath porch lights and strings of orange bulbs.

Then Karen stepped directly into their path.

She was impossible to miss.

Her metallic orange blouse and enormous pink ruffles seemed almost brighter than the Halloween decorations around her. Her magenta-and-orange hair was swept high above her face, and her oversized candy-pink handbag swung against her hip as she pointed toward the children’s buckets.

The children’s father, Marcus Reed, immediately stepped forward.

He was tall and solidly built, dressed simply in a dark green jacket and jeans. His body language was calm, but his expression changed the instant he understood what Karen was trying to do.

“Get back,” Marcus said. “You are not searching my kid’s candy.”

Karen’s eyes narrowed.

“I’m the only one here actually paying attention!”

She leaned around Marcus, trying to look inside the vampire costume’s bucket.

Marcus moved with her, blocking the view.

“You’re not their parent. You’re not security. Move along.”

Karen threw both hands into the air.

“So you’d rather trust every stranger on this street than let me check one bag?”

Several parents had stopped walking.

Karen noticed them watching and seemed energized by the attention.

“I live here,” she snapped. “I know what happens in this neighborhood.”

Marcus glanced toward the children.

“Then you should know parents decide what happens to their children.”

The children remained silent behind him.

For a moment, Karen looked as if she might continue.

Instead, she stepped backward, jabbed a finger at Marcus, and raised her voice.

“If something happens to that child tonight, will you still say I was wrong for trying to check what you refused to check?”

Marcus did not answer.

He simply took out his phone.

Karen’s expression changed.

“What are you doing?”

“Recording.”

The word traveled through the small crowd.

A few parents exchanged looks.

Karen stared at the phone, then at Marcus.

“You don’t have permission to record me.”

Marcus lowered the phone just enough to keep it from becoming provocative.

“You don’t need my permission to stop interfering with my children.”

Karen’s face hardened.

Then, unexpectedly, she turned and walked toward the neighborhood clubhouse.

Marcus watched her go.

He thought the incident was over.

It wasn’t.

Twenty minutes later, a message appeared in the neighborhood group chat.

URGENT: HALLOWEEN CANDY SAFETY INCIDENT — HOA RESPONSE NEEDED.

And attached beneath it was a photograph of Marcus’s children.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Karen had posted their picture without asking.

And she was calling him the parent who had “refused a basic safety inspection.”
