Chapter 1: The Snake Beside the Cart
“You put that snake here! Don’t you dare lie to me!”
The shout stopped Frank Miller in the middle of the elementary-school hallway.
He had been pushing his cleaning cart past the classroom doors when a gigantic pink handbag slammed against the side of it. The cart rattled, and a rubber snake bounced onto the polished floor.
Frank stopped.
The snake lay beside one of his cleaning buckets, its painted eyes staring harmlessly toward the ceiling. Its body was stiff in a way no living snake’s body could be.
Still, the woman standing over it was already pointing at him.
“I saw you bring it in!” she shouted.
Frank looked from the fake snake to the woman.
Her name was Diane Whitaker, a woman in her early sixties known around the school for making forceful complaints whenever she believed something was being handled improperly. She was dressed in a bright yellow blouse with orange ruffles, a fluorescent pink vest, vivid orange trousers, and glossy platform shoes. Her towering orange hair made her impossible to miss.
Frank had never met her under circumstances this tense.
“I didn’t bring that,” he said.
Diane stepped closer.
“You’re responsible for checking this hallway.”
“I check it.”
“Then how did you miss a snake?”
Frank bent slightly and looked at the object.
There was a molded seam running along its side.
“It isn’t real.”
“That doesn’t make it better,” Diane snapped. “What if a child had seen it?”
Frank straightened.
He understood the safety concern. What he did not understand was why she was accusing him before anyone had asked what happened.
A school staff member, Linda Brooks, hurried out from the office corridor. She wore a navy blazer, a light-blue blouse, and a school identification badge.
“What happened?”
Diane pointed at the snake.
“Your cleaning staff brought this in and left it here.”
Linda looked down.
Then she looked at Frank.
Frank shook his head.
“I didn’t.”
Diane’s voice rose again.
“I saw him with the cart!”
Linda did not argue.
Instead, she glanced toward the wall above them.
A security camera was aimed directly down the hallway.
“Step back,” Linda said. “We have security footage.”
Diane’s expression changed almost imperceptibly.
Her pointing hand lowered.
Then her eyes moved toward the camera.
Frank noticed.
Linda went to the office computer and pulled up the footage.
The hallway appeared on the screen several minutes earlier.
Diane was there.
Alone.
She walked toward the cleaning cart.
She looked down the hallway.
Then she placed the rubber snake beside the cart.
Frank stared at the screen.
Linda stared, too.
Diane’s face lost its certainty.
But only for a moment.
She pointed toward the monitor.
“Delete that footage—or I’ll make sure this school pays for humiliating me!”
The hallway went quiet.
Linda looked at her steadily.
“You’re threatening the school because the footage contradicts your accusation?”
Diane’s jaw tightened.
The snake remained on the floor between them, harmless and artificial.
But the accusation against Frank had just changed direction.
