Chapter 1: Get This Damn Hose Off My Lawn

“Get this damn hose off my lawn! You’re tearing everything up!”

Karen Whitmore’s voice cut through the late-afternoon emergency like another alarm.

She had both hands wrapped around a thick firefighting hose and was pulling backward with all the strength her heavy frame could manage. Her coral shoes slipped through the wet grass. Her bright red cardigan, hot-pink blouse, yellow scarf, and orange patterned pants looked almost absurd against the gray smoke hanging over the neighborhood.

The hose dragged across the lawn.

Grass flattened beneath it.

Water sprayed across the flower bed.

Karen pulled harder.

A firefighter in full protective gear seized the hose several feet away from her and pulled it back toward the smoking house.

“Let go! There’s a fire!”

Karen refused.

She dug her shoes into the soaked lawn and leaned backward.

“This is my property!”

The firefighter tried to reposition the hose without touching her.

Karen grabbed it again.

Behind him, smoke rolled from the upper windows of the house next door.

Emergency lights flashed against parked cars.

A siren continued somewhere behind them.

Karen pointed angrily at the grass.

“Look at my lawn!”

For a moment, the firefighter simply stared at her.

Not because he had never encountered an angry homeowner.

He had.

But there was something unsettling about the timing.

The roofline behind him was disappearing beneath thicker smoke.

He turned toward the house.

Then back to Karen.

“People are still inside.”

Karen froze.

It lasted less than a second.

Her eyes moved toward the smoke.

Then down toward the flattened strip of lawn.

Her jaw tightened.

“Then save their house without ruining mine!”

She reached for the hose again.

The firefighter pulled it out of reach.

The emergency sounds from the house suddenly grew louder.

Karen turned.

A dark cloud pushed through an upper window.

The firefighter looked at her.

“You’re worried about grass while someone may be trapped inside.”

Karen’s face hardened.

She pointed toward the house, then toward her lawn.

“If saving their house costs me my lawn, maybe their house wasn’t worth saving.”

The firefighter’s expression changed.

He did not argue.

He simply turned and ran toward the house.

Karen remained beside the wet lawn, breathing hard.

For the first time, the hose was no longer in her hands.

But the words she had just spoken were still hanging in the air.

And neither she nor anyone else knew that someone had heard them.

Someone who would remember every word.
